Parabens: The Dirty Secret

November 2019

Parabens have long been used in cosmetics and other self-care products to preserve their shelf life. Parabens naturally occur in a variety of plants including strawberries, carrots and onions to name a few. However, the body metabolizes the parabens when consumed orally. For use in cosmetics, parabens are synthetically created in labs. The form of parabens found in cosmetics bypasses the metabolism entering directly into the bloodstream.

Many studies have indicated that parabens can disrupt hormone function in otherwise healthy adults. This occurs as a result of parabens entering into the bloodstream through the use of cosmetics.

Parabens also have an environmental cost associated with them. These products contain toxic ingredients which continue to pollute the environment. Each time cosmetics or bath products are used that contains parabens these toxic chemicals are washed down the drain. Just as these chemicals can impact human hormone function many scientists believe they can have the same impact on marine life.

As a consumer, each person has the ability to make informed, socially responsible choices. This includes purchasing products which contain natural ingredients which don't cause harm to their bodies or the environment.
